An abomination. All the treasures found at Jericho had been designated for the Tabernacle, as they symbolized the firstfruits of the Promised land.
So, the word “abomination” here refers to how man cannot take what is designated to the Lord. If so, it is abominable in the eyes of God. But Achan disobeyed. He took objects consecrated to the Lord and hid them, causing the people to suffer terrible consequences.
By that action, Achan broke the Covenant with the Eternal God, while failure flows from a lack of union with Him. In this case, small obstacles become insurmountable barriers.
