John 19: The Soldiers Mock Jesus

The whips. The Lord Jesus was victim of the most severe punishment preceded the crucifixion and was only applied to perpetrators of serious crimes. The person was stripped and tied to a pole or to a sstake and was then whipped so severely that even the soldiers became exhausted.

The instrument used was a whip made of leather straps and strands that had pieces of bone, lead, and metal attached to the ends. As the victim was whipped, his body was torn, usually to the point of exposing bones( Isa. 53.5).

Therefore, some sentenced died before they were even crucified. According to Jewish laws there was a limit to forty blows (Deut. 25. 2-3), but by Roman laws there was no limit.
