Jeremiah 19: The Sign of the Broken Flask

Go and get a potter’s earthen flask. In the previous chapter, God showed the skills and patience of the potter working with clay to transform it into a useful piece.

But when Jeremiah received the command to go back there and get a potter’s earthen flask (a long-necked vessel intended to store water).

The order was for the prophet to take the elders and religious leaders to the Potsherd Gate, located at the Valley of the Son of Hinnom.

This place is associated with idolatrous cults where children were sacrificed. According to some scholars, that place is also identified as the Refuse Gate from the time of Nehemiah (Neh. 2.13). In that degrading place, the dirt of the city was dumped, like burned garbage, putrefying animals, and broken pots. Through that, the Lord wanted to show the stat of spiritual contamination in which Judah was in.
