Genesis 12: Promises to Abram

Get out of your country. As long as Abram was bound to his country, customs, beliefs, friends, family, and comfort, God could not make him into a great nation. Staying there would jeopardize his belief in the One God.

People would try to plant doubt and make him give up on his faith. In that country, Abram would be unable to envision anything better than the lands he would inherit from his father. After all, he lived in Ur of the Chaldeans, a cosmopolitan city that had all the modern conveniences of that period.

Abram and Sarai were established and close to the people they loved, and in that age, it was extremely unusual for clans to break up; families stayed together to secure possessions and perpetuate the family name. And yet, if he had disobeyed, he would not have enjoyed a close relationship with the Almighty, God would no t have been called his Friend and he would not have had the privilege of giving birth to the earthly nation of Israel, or the spiritual nation of his descendants in the faith.

Those who lack the courage to sacrifice and obey, as Abram did, lose the chance to see the greatness of God in their lives.
