The Word. That Roman centurion was a commander over a hundred soldiers or so. Even though he was a stranger, he had a perfect understanding of the creative power of the Word of the Lord Jesus. He saw that the Savior that the Savior’s authority was capable of accomplishing anything.

By saying “I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof,” the centurion showed humility and knowledge of Jewish traditions.

He ken what a Jew would become ceremonially unclean if he entered the house of a Gentile. The Lord Jesus marveled at the faith and fear of the Roman centurion, to the point of Him saying that He had not found such great faith , not even in Israel (v.9).
