Matthew 5: The Beatitudes
Blessed are the poor in spirit. There is a discussion about the type of poverty that the Lord Jesus referred to – whether it is material or spiritual. But if we look closely at the expression “in spirit,” we will understand the real meaning of what He said. This poverty in spirit is related to a deep sense of humility, which makes us recognize our spiritual misery and our condition as sinners.
If we look honestly into ourselves, we will see how dependent we are on the mercy of the Most High.
The kingdom of Heaven belongs to the humble because only they submit to the Word of Truth and turn to the Lord. The humble are aware that they are not saved because of their righteousness; they know it is nothing by filthy rags (Isa. 64.6). The Kingdom of God is not for the rich or for the poor, materially speaking, but for the repentant. Although he was the king of Israel, David entered the presence of the Almighty saying :But I am poor and needy” (Ps 40.17). He was humble in spirit to recognize that, without God , he was nothing and no one.
