Matthew 4: Satan Tempts Jesus
The Jesus was led up by the Spirit in the wilderness. It is intersting to note that it was the Holy Spirit Himself Who led the Lord Jesus into the wilderness. The temptations of the devil served to highlight the Son’s Holiness, dependence, faithfulness, and obedience to the Father. These attributes were necessary to testify, both in heaven and on earth, that the Messiah was the perfect Lamb, with out sin or blame.
Only then could He be accepted as the Living Sacrifice for the sins of humankind.
We may go through the wilderness because of our mistakes and bad choices; in this case, it becomes a period of discipline and correction of us (Heb. 12.6-68).
However, if we are led into the wilderness because of an injustice, it become and opportunity for us to exercise our trust in God. This happened to Joseph, who was wronged by his brothers (Gen. 37); but it was all part of God’s plan for joseph and His people. The desert is like a school, where the Holy Spirit forms men and women for His service and purposes.
