Matthew 23: Woe to the Scribes and Pharisees
In Moses’ seat. The pride and vanity of the scribes and Pharisees were so great that they proclaimed themselves to have the same authority as Moses. They did this to force people to obey them. However, Moses’ authority was backed by his righteous character and obedience to the Commandments of the Most High. Moses never took advantage of his position of leadership but served God and the people all the days of his life. The intention of those religious leaders was not to serve God or the people; on the contrary, they were unfaithful and sought glory for themselves.
