Luke 2: Glory in the Highest
A decree went out from Caesar. All the prophecies about the birth of the Messiah were fulfilled. The Scriptures said the He would descend from Israel and come from the tribe of Judah. This was fulfilled through Abraham (Gen. 12.3; 17.4-6; 49.10).
The prophecies affirmed that He would e of David’s lineage and would be born of a virgin, in the city of Bethlehem, in Judea (2 Sam. 7.16; Isa. 7.14; Mal. 5.2).
In this sense, the decree of the emperor Caesar Augustus for a census collaborated with God’s purposes.
After all, the people had to return to their own cities to e registered (v.3). the ancestors of Joseph and Mary were from Bethlehem, so they went to that city. The Roman emperor, who believed that he was organizing his kingdom, was in fact fulfilling God’s plan.
