Isaiah 11: The Reign of Jesse’s Offspring
The Rod. Judah’s destruction by Babylon would almost annihilate the seed of Abraham. However the Divine Judgement spared a remnant. Between them, David’s lineage, called here the “stem of Jesse.” This preservation took place so that the Messiah would come the humankind.
The Lord Jesus is described as a “Rod” which means a new part, a small and fragile bud of a plant.
He would “sprout forth from a tree” in a unpromising appearance, proceeding from a simple family, under circumstances unlikely to a king. In spite of this, the “Bud” grew, and He became the main “Stem” from where the “branches” are born, who are all those that by faith bind themselves to Him and bear fruit for His Kingdom (John 15).
