Genesis 17: The Sign of the Covenant
Twenty-four years after promising to Abram a son through Sarai, the Lord appeared to him and referred to Himself as Almighty God. In other words, nothing is impossible for Him and none of His promises can fail to come true. But he demanded on thing of Abram: to walk before Him and be blameless. His heart would need to be totally devoted to Him and he would need to be obedient to His will. In addition, he would need to submit to His discipline.
Profession but would need to be proven by obedience.
By submitting to the Most High’s standards, Abram was recognizing His authority, and consequently was considered righteous and the friend of God. This reveals that the faith that comes from the Spirit of God is disciplined and leads us to do what pleases Him.
If someone says he has faith, but this faith does not correct him or encourage him or overcome sin, doubt, fear and unrighteousness, then it is false. It is similar to the dead faith of demons. Although they believe and even tremble before the Almighty (James 2.19), the do not repent or submit to Him. Genuine faith brings life, obeys, perseveres, and accepts spiritual discipline.
