Galatians 2: Defending the Gospel
Compelled to be circumcised. Some Jews who had converted to the Gospel believed that circumcision was essential for Salvation, they did not accept that faith in the Lord Jesus alone was enough.
Although they believed in Him as the Messiah, they continued to follow all the instructions of the Law and the Jewish rites.
Moreover, the advised the Gentiles who had become Christians to do the same. Paul instructed the Galatians to stand firm in the teachings he had taught them (Rom. 4.9-12).
He mentioned the example of Titus a Greek who had converted to faith in Jesus and became a faithful co-worker in the Work of God, who was not circumcised.
Circumcision was a sign of the Covenant between God and the Jewish people, but it was no longer necessary once the New Covenant had come into place.
This disagreement over the need of circumcision was settled at the Jerusalem Council (Act 15.1-19).
